Why You Should Buy A Modular Backpacking Tent
Tents are the tried and true camping shelter. Not all tents are created equal though. When backpacking, there is a lot to consider when selecting a tent. Price, weight, comfort. Here is why you should select a tent that is modular.
There are a lot of different shelter options out there for backpacking. If you want to stick with a tent its a great idea to find one that is modular. Typically a tent is designed to be pitched and then the rainfly is then attached to the main body of the tent. With a modular tent, you can set up the rainfly poles and footprint without the main body of the tent. We have tested different configurations and really love the flexibility this type of tent provides.

Pro’s
-Options. You can choose to use just the footprint on nice clear nights, or the footprint and the rainfly if you think you might get a little rain or want some extra warmth. You can use just the body of the tent and the footprint if its a clear night but you need to keep the bugs out, or you can use the entire system for real cold nights or for a little more harsh weather.
-Lighter. If you have a pretty good idea what the weather is like you choose to leave the parts of the tent home that you don’t need. We left the body of the tent on our last trip and just took the footprint, poles and rainfly which saved us a whole pound (2 person tent).
-Cheaper. You can buy one great quality tent that can provide different shelter types instead of purchasing different setups separately.
Con’s
-Still heavy for ultralight. If you need rain and wind protection, the shelter still winds up being fairly heavy since you still have the entire fly, footprint and the poles (ours weighed in at approx. 3 lbs.).
– More expensive than purchasing a large tarp. If you don’t want to bother with a tent there are some light and fairly inexpensive tarp setups that can work a lot better.
Our Recommendations
The Marmot Colfax 2P is a great quality tent. Comes with all of modular options and has a footprint included. The overall weight is a little high (5 lbs. 14 oz) but for the price and quality it is pretty hard to beat.
Price: $269.00
