Hiking With A Baby? How To Conveniently And Inexpensively Bring Baby Food

Once a baby wants more then just milk things can get a little tricky. Especially when you want to go hiking with your baby.  You can’t just toss them a granola bar and think they will be happy haha (if only). This is how we have been able to go on long hikes with a baby and not worry about how we were going to feed them.

The baby food pouches have been around for a while but since I make my own food I have only used them a couple times. The reusable baby food pouches on the other hand are becoming more and more popular. So we decided to jump on the band wagon and get some. There are many choices out there, but here is the one we got. We chose this one because it has the zippers on the bottom, so you can easily fill and clean them. We also liked that they came with two valves. The valves are really nice, especially for our older girl, so when she squeezes it to hard all the food won’t spill out.

Our 2 year old loves the pouches! I made carrots for our 7 month old but our oldest devoured them. She also loves applesauce and yogurt, so it is nice to just put it in a pouch and not have to worry about a huge mess. If I gave her that in a bowl then the table, chair, her face, hands, spoon, floor, and bowl would all be dirty. She also loves to move! So with a pouch she can take it anywhere she is going and not have to sit still in one spot.

Our 7 month old also loves them. Using a spoon with her helps but it isn’t necessary. She is slowly figuring out how to suck on them so soon she will be able to use them her self. Another nice thing is that I can easily hold her in one hand and still feed her. I don’t have to juggle a jar or a spoon. We have loved taking them with us on our trips.

You are probably thinking I could just go buy the food pouches from the store but let me do a little comparison for you.

So 6 carrots = approx. 3-4 pouches that are 5 oz.

A 2 lb. bag at Walmart costs around-$1.34   2 lb. is about 12-16 carrots.

Lets say you got 12 carrots in your bag. With that lets say you only got 6 pouches filled.  That would come out to a cost of 0.22 cents a pouch. If you were able to get 8 pouches that would come out to a cost of 0.17 cents a pouch.

A 6 pack of apple and carrots pouches at Walmart = 7.89 0r 1.32 per pouch and are only 4 0z.

That is a huge savings!! It takes a little time to prepare it all but not much. Just cook your carrots then blend them when they are done, and poor into the pouches. If you do a big batch then you can even freeze the pouches. I also like that I know exactly what is in the food and there is no unnecessary additives.

Thanks for posting this! I will definitely have to get some of those pouches when Riley starts taking solids!
